May 11, 2016 For backpackers who typically carry 30 to 45 pounds, the Traverse 70 is a good value in a midweight pack. The women’s Traverse 65 ($239) comes in three sizes, XS to M. See all of my reviews of backpacks and backpacking gear, including my review of models very similar in capacity and weight, the Osprey men’s Atmos AG 65 and women’s Aura AG 65.

Rei Traverse 35
I was looking for a bag that was small (and normal looking) enough to serve as a 'regular' backpack, but had the comfort, durability, and capacity of a trail-specific bag. This traverse 30 fits that bill. I've used it on single-night backpacking trips, a 3-night bike-packing trek, and for all sorts of errands around town.
What I like about it is that can comfortably hold my tent, pad, sleeping bag, cycling gear, sleeping clothes, and some food. It takes creative packing and small/light gear, but it can be done! After three long days on my shoulders, the bag didn't get too uncomfortable. I also like that this bag appears to be a 'normal' backpack and it is professional enough for me to bring to work.
I love nooks, crannies, and organizational pockets. This bag doesn't have that. To remedy that, I bought a $20 REI travel document organizer that fits perfectly in a front pocket and works just as well - if not better. I do love the small top pocket for sunglasses or other easily damaged items. I also like that, unlike most bags this size, the Traverse 30 has sizeable hip belt pockets.
There are four small loops on the front of the pack, these work perfectly for storing my bike's U-lock, and I occasionally criss-cross some cord through to bind extra or larger gear externally.
As far as some things that aren't perfect, it does get a little warm against my back in the humid Minnesota summers - but most any bag would. There is a water-reservoir pouch, but uses it will take up a bit of bag storage. My only other complaint is that the side-pocket water bottle holders limit what can be put there. They perfectly and securely fit the 32oz. Nalgene style, but smaller bottles fall out and larger bottles (I have a 48oz Nalgene) don't fit well at all.
